The fact that the competition is named after the outstanding pianist of the XXth Century Emil Gilels is quite symbolic.

Emil Gilels is a native of Odessa, graduate of Odessa State Conservatoire, People’s Artist of the USSR, Laureate of national and international competitions, Professor of Moscow Conservatoire, Laureate of the USSR State Award, Honorary Member of London Queen Academy of Music and Musical Academy after F. List (Budapest). The competitions is aimed to open new talents who are honorable to bear the name of the laureate of the international competition in memory of great musician Emil Gilels.

We can say with proud that Ukrainian piano school, together with the world piano school showed the high level of performance. From 10 finalists three are representatives of Ukraine, two – Russia, two – the USA, and the representatives of France, China and Serbia. The Serbia contestant took part in the competition for the first time. In the 3rd Round 10 participants instead of 6 were sorted. It proves the extremely high level of the competition itself and the participants. In the 3rd Round the participants played concerts with the Odessa National Philharmonic orchestra, art director and the main conductor, the honored worker of arts of Ukraine – Hobart Earle. All the participants and the Organizational committee express their deep gratitude to the musicians of the orchestra and Hobart Earle personally for his heroism and professionalism in performing 10 concerts.
Taking into consideration the high level of organization and mastery of the participants of the competition, an honorable jury member, Doctor of Arts, Academician, critic, writer, Professor Gustav Alink, the founder of International “Argerich-Alink” Foundation (AAF), made a proposal to introduce the International piano competition in memory of Emil Gilels into world association of International competitions and catalogues of the world.
